6 Reasons I love To Watch the Sunset & Make Time For It

It’s only today that I learnt a new word to describe myself – Opacarophile, a person who loves sunsets. The word is composed of “opacare” which is Latin for sunset (or dusk), and ‘phile’ which is Greek for love.

There is definitely something magical about a sunset; those moments in a day when I am transported to another time and space. Even though I may see one every day, its beauty never ceases to amaze me. The sky like a canvas painted with different hues of colors – the pearly pinks, the vibrant purple, the soothing yellow and in between a bright orange ball of fire slowly sinking down.

Those few minutes of mine I don’t like to give it to anybody or to anything else. I’ll be selfish that way in wanting to make the most out of it.

  • I sense the change in the atmosphere. I look at the flight of birds moving in their orderly fashion back to their nests. A calming feeling comes over. Whatever be the mood I am in, a burst of peace and tranquility engulfs. It’s that time to ask myself if I was the kind of person I wanted to be, if I did all things that I planned to do in the day, was I taking anything for granted. It’s that time to think, to introspect and more importantly simply accept all that’s come my way.
  • I just watch what unfolds. Each day’s sunset is different from the previous. I don’t wish for a cloud to be of a different shape or any color to be a tone lighter or darker. The beauty happens and I simply witness. Gratitude and praise combine inside me at once. There are no anticipations. Expectations only bring in misery.
  • Something that was burning hot some hours ago can be a soothing calm. Much like the tempers I also go through or the ones I have seen in other people too. We are each a bundle of goodness with traits that can be not so good.
  • Watching the sunset is relaxing. It is magnificent giving me enough inspiration, enough reason to be grateful to end a healthy day & look forward for another one.
  • It’s become so normal, so easy to get through a whole day without even stopping to appreciate or admire anything. There’s a constant rush to tick one task and move onto the next, go about mindless scrolling on social media, not taking a notice of what’s going on around. In these tiny minutes, I experience the delight of an entire day.
  • That form of meditation when even for a teeny weeny while I go thoughtless. I stare as the sun gradually goes out of sight leaving behind a mixed pastel residue. I feel the chaos melting off, a perfect way to unwind, being comfortable in the moment.

Just like it’s soaking in the glorious sunset for me, I would like to ask you to take out sometime in the day to do that which really matters to you, that precious thing you look forward to daily, that time with yourself. Small acts like these build a stronger core inside you 🙂
